Athens Hocking Solid Waste District

Clothing & Textiles

Materials such as clothing, bedding, towels, fabric can be reused or sold to benefit good causes in our community. Other textiles that are stained, ripped or not in a useable state can be used by larger thrift stores who send the items to be recycled into new materials. Consider separating good clothing or textiles and fabrics from the stained or worn items so it is easier to sort at the thrift store. Alternatively, these pieces of fabric can be good packing materials for moving! They can be torn and made into rags instead of using single-use paper towels and can be cut up to make strips of fabric for quilts, rugs and other items.

Dispose

Many of our clothes are made with plastic. Some of the synthetic fibers in our clothes are called polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or most commonly known as polyester, nylon, acrylic and others. These fibers are made from crude oil, which makes them almost impossible to reuse in other ways — meaning they cannot be recycled or composed. Therefore, clothing and textiles should be “disposed of” by recycling at the locations above or the location closest to you. Materials that are significantly worn beyond a state of repair or reuse should be discarded in the trash.
