Bulbs

CFLs and other fluorescent bulbs often break when thrown into the trash or dumpster which releases mercury into the environment. Recycling prevents the release of this toxic chemical into the environment and allows reuse of the glass, metals and other materials that make up fluorescent lights. Virtually all components of a fluorescent bulb can be recycled. Learn more about CFLs and mercury.

Light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs do not contain mercury but are made with other hazardous substances such as lead and arsenic. When thrown into the trash, LED bulbs break and release chemicals which inevitably end up in our landfills and in the water stream.

Dispose

LEDs, CFLs, and other fluorescent bulbs and should never be thrown into the trash due to the toxic chemicals they contain.

Incandescent bulbs may be tossed into the trash. If an incandescent bulb is broken, wrap it first in newspaper before placing it in your trash bin. This prevents broken edges from cutting through your garbage bag, and it helps protect you and your waste hauler from accidental injury.
